Your Community Helps You      You Help Your Community

Exercising isn't just performing a workout routine. You can add exercise to your daily life while also helping your community or having fun with your family & friends. Helping out with Christmas tree sales or walking from one end of the zoo to another are two examples of how you can get a great, many hour long workout that you can also feel really good about.

Scouting Holiday Spirit

_St. James Boy Scout Troop 681 is selling Christmas trees in the school parking lot on Broad Street. Scouting for Food on 11/12/2011

Last week scouts across our country gave out donation bags. Today scouts collected the the bags, filled with food and delivered to food banks. Zander and I were happy to help with our scout troop. But don't forget that food banks run all year long. Please remember to help food banks as often as you can. An idea: locate your local food bank and once a month buy and drop off a bag of nonperishable food. A box of pasta, can of soup or a box of tea is always appreciated.
SPECIAL NOTE: healthful & kid friendly items like: nut butter, jam, granola bars, fruit leathers or crackers are especially welcome! Baby friendly items like formula, tissues and diapers, too :)

Chef Teaches & Learns from Senior Students

"Chef Teaches, Learns from Senior Students" By Leslie Poster

When Ray Riddle, food service director at Chesterbrook Residences a senior assisted housing facility in North Arlington, started a monthly cooking class for the facility's residents, he planned not only to teach his senior pupils something, but to learn from them as well." (Read the article at
FCNP Online Edition)

From Bonita: Why was I so happy to see this article? Seriously, my eyes misted! Because this is one of the programs Chef Jose Castro & I set up when I was Food Service Director at Chesterbrook Residences. I am so glad Ray is keeping some of the nutritional education programs that I gave him. I don't care how young or old you are - the more you know about what is wonderful & healthful with your meal, the more you will be happy to eat it. Thanks Ray. Keep up the good work!

Budget Cuts Forcing Cancellation of Local Classes

Falls Church News Press Letters to the Editor: February 24 - March 2, 2011

Once of the best features of our wonderful city is the community spirit. I personally love the Farmers Market, the fairs, festivals, concerts, town clean up days, sports teams and myriad of family friendly activities. These are great social gatherings that also help us to see and commune with our friends and neighbors. Community sponsored events are an especially important part of our Falls Church City lifestyle in these times of economic hardship. They are an big piece of what binds us together as a friendly and supportive town.

Unfortunately, many of our community services have also received budget cuts. Now they need our help and support! The Falls Church Recreation Center has to cancel a significant number of classes and events due to low registration. When you consider all the work they put into providing these opportunities for us, this is heart breaking! Remember, future budget allocations depend in part on current community interest and involvement.

Please take a moment to look at all the great offerings in the Falls Church City Recreation Center's catalogue. Now is the time when we as a community can give great support to our community center. If we are there for the center, they will be able to continue to support our town's very special social lifestyle.

Bonita Woods,  Falls Church City, VA

(I shared this with you because our community center's dilemma is probably the same as yours. Please check with your center and see if they need your support to continue caring for your community.)

A request for help!

I just got word that my local food bank is in desperate need for canned soup. While the days are warming up, the nights are still cold. Families that can't afford food also can not afford to keep their homes toasty warm. Please check with your local food bank and see if they need donations. Are your kids underfoot and in the way? Send the around the neighborhood (with friends or a chaperone) collecting food donations! Also, please remember that kid friendly food like peanut butter and snacks are also needed.
